This session was led by Nick Aymes, an Apple Distinguished Educator, Apple Education Trainer and teacher with over 20 years experience.
We started off considering why coding is important, how the curriculum progresses from Key Stage 1 up to 3 and how iPad and the App Store can help deliver this.
Nick introduced us to a number of useful apps including Daisy the Dino, Bee-Bot, Alex, Hopscot and Cargo-Bot. We spent time using both Scratch Jnr and Tynker which offer fantastic opportunities to learn and develop programming knowledge. Working through simple tutorials we all quickly built programs that we could adapt and debug when needed!
We then experimented with MakeyMakey; a brilliant tool to see and touch coding with a MakeyMakey circuit board and some crocodile clips.
We used playdough to make an incredibly quick program which controlled a ghost move across the screen. When we discovered that the conductivity could go through all of our delegates and students and it still controlled the program, we really were amazed! Thanks to Nick and Ant for a really interesting session.
